What is Air Canada’s baggage policy?

Air Canada has certain rules and guidelines related to Baggage Policy. Normally, you are allowed to bring one standard item and one personal item with you regardless of the destination. The carry-on bag should be light enough to fit inside the overhead bin without any assistance.

If traveling with a baby on your lap, you are allowed to bring one additional standard article for carrying your child’s belongings.

List of standard/personal articles:

  • Carry-on bag, roller bag, backpack, briefcase, laptop
  • Cat or small dog in its carrier
  • Airport shopping and duty-free purchases
  • Sport racquet (e.g., tennis, squash, badminton), musical instrument
  • Camera bag, diplomatic or consular bag
  • Garment bag (size and weight restrictions apply)
  • To know more about the restrictions on carry-on baggage, please click here.

Checked Baggage Policy:

If your bags exceed any of these limits- number, size, and/or weight, additional charges for your checked baggage will be applicable.

For checking your additional, overweight, or oversized bags, it is advised to reach the airport at least 120 minutes before the scheduled departure.

If your bags exceed the below-mentioned weight/size limit, you will need to contact Air Canada Cargo:

32 kg (70 lb) in weight

292 cm (115 inches) in linear dimensions, and/or

203 cm (80 inches) in length

Checked Baggage Policy for Military Personnel:

The retired and eligible active members of the U.S. and Canadian military are allowed up to three pieces of checked baggage, each weighing up to 32 kg (70 lb) when traveling on Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express flights.

Checked Baggage Policy for Codeshare Flights:

If your itinerary includes codeshare flights (another airline), it’s important to know the baggage policies of the other carrier that may apply.

Baggage Screening and Locked Bags:

To ensure your security, all checked bags must go through the screening process. In some cases, you may be required to open your bags for search purposes. If you prefer to lock your bag, it is recommended that you use a lock that can easily be opened by airport security agencies during the screening process.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) also provides essential information on the many aspects of the pre-board screening process.

What is Air Canada’s cancelation policy?

Any delays or cancelations in flights may occur due to various reasons such as weather conditions or technical faults. As per Air Canada’s cancelation policy, if your Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express flight gets canceled or delayed, there is an option to use their ‘Delayed and Cancelled Flight Service’. Through this, you can look for another flight online or cancel the remaining flight(s).

Alternatively, Air Canada also gives you the option of raising a refund request for the unused part of your ticket.

How to Request for a Refund?

In the event of flight cancelation or delay by more than 2 hours, you can reach out to the Air Canada agents at the airport or call Air Canada Reservations. The refund amount will be inclusive of the fare, all taxes, and other charges paid for added travel options.
